The old wastewater treatment facilities in the Kyrgyz city of Naryn are unable to cope with sewage and are polluting the country's main water artery – the river of the same name.
The central wastewater treatment facility in Naryn was put into operation in 1968. According to the project, the treatment facility was built with biological treatment, but the climatic conditions of the region were not taken into account during construction, which is why the biological treatment has not been functioning since its commissioning.
Currently, only mechanical treatment is being carried out. The treatment efficiency is only 35-45%. The overall condition of the treatment facility is unsatisfactory.
The wastewater treatment facilities in the city of Naryn, Naryn region do not meet environmental and technical requirements. Sewage undergoes only mechanical treatment and is discharged into the river of the same name. According to available information, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided a loan of 2 million euros to improve the sewage system and build a new treatment complex on the site of the existing one, which is four times more powerful. Nevertheless, poorly treated sewage continues to enter and pollute the river.
There are 4 wastewater treatment facilities in the Naryn region: 1 operates satisfactorily, 2 unsatisfactorily, and 1 is not operational.

The wastewater treatment facility of the University of Central Asia was put into operation in 2014. The designed capacity is 100 cubic meters per day, and the actual capacity is 50 cubic meters per day. Today, more than 40,000 people live in Naryn.
