Deforestation for Fish Ponds Leading to Land Swamping. Tokmok.
Coordinates: 42.852012, 75.236655
Massive deforestation, marshland formation, and the extermination of red-listed birds and animals have all resulted from the emergence of dozens of fish farms right within the territory of the only large forest in the Chuy region of Kyrgyzstan.
Since 2022, large areas of forest around the city of Tokmok have begun to be fenced off. Authorities have allowed the use of the forestry area for so-called trout farms. From that moment on, a systematic destruction of the forestry ecosystem began. In the territory of the Chuy Forestry of the Chuy district, mass logging of planted forests is taking place on leased plots, and economic activities are being conducted in areas where the forest has been destroyed. Industrial-scale excavation of pits for fish farming is being carried out, the groundwater flow is being altered, leading to further marshland formation, and the drainage of water is disrupted beyond the flooded areas. Floodplain forests are being massively destroyed. Notably, in the Chuy region, the processes of flooding are more widespread compared to other regions of the republic. Areas with groundwater depths of less than 3 meters cover a sublatitudinally elongated zone north of the Big Chuy Canal and the Chaldybar-Tokmok road, where many settlements and agricultural lands are located under unfavorable conditions.
In many places on the lands of the Chuy Forestry, spontaneous dumps of household waste have been observed, often accompanied by frequent fires and self-ignition.
The Chuy Forestry includes four forestry enterprises, including the city of Tokmok. These are branches in the villages of Ak-Beshim, Shamshy, and Kegety.
