The garbage at the solid waste landfill in the city of Naryn has been smoldering for several years. According to specialists, the deep-seated garbage is burning. The area of the fire has already exceeded one hectare. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the garbage is smoldering at depths of several meters, and heavy machinery is needed for its dismantling and dousing. Throughout this time, a thick haze has been hanging over the landfill.
Residents of Naryn who live near the landfill complain that it is difficult to confuse the burning dump with anything else – for several kilometers around the site of the landfill, the acrid smoke of burning garbage is felt, and a haze spreads across the ground, causing them to choke on the smell of smoke.
Experts believe that one of the reasons the landfill is burning, aside from spontaneous ignitions, is the improper storage of waste: the layers of garbage were poorly covered with soil, and due to the methane released during heating, self-ignition occurs. Local authorities and agencies do not respond to the long-standing fire and smoke.
