Smog over Bishkek

42°48'07.4"N 74°36'25.8"E

Location "Panorama". During the heating season, smog hangs over Bishkek, which does not dissipate for a long time. The main cause of air pollution is the combustion of fuel.

Due to weather conditions, a veil of harmful particles hangs in one place, neither dispersing nor settling. The smog consists of several pollutants: sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde, and ammonia. It also contains pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, benzo(a)pyrene, as well as heavy metals: lead, cadmium, and others.

The most polluted area is the central part of the city and the private sector during the heating season. Smog is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, people with heart and lung conditions, as well as allergy sufferers.
According to the AirVisual website, Bishkek has been recognized as one of the cities with the dirtiest air in the world. Periodically, air pollution reaches the "very unhealthy" mark — the second-to-last category out of six in the air quality index.

This air affects people's health, especially children. In early December, activists held rallies demanding that authorities take action to improve the situation. However, no measures have been taken so far.

To protect against pollution, it is important to know about air quality. Various sensors are used to measure air quality outdoors and indoors. By knowing the air quality, we can take important measures. During peak pollution periods, it is necessary to refrain from ventilating rooms, from physical exertion, and to take precautions in advance.
