The problem with the landfill in Cholpon-Ata has existed for several years. Residents of the region have repeatedly appealed to the local administration, writing complaints and lawsuits.
According to the residents of Cholpon-Ata, the area of the landfill is increasing every day. They are outraged that waste is dumped here not only from Cholpon-Ata but also from nearby villages and boarding houses. Residents of Issyk-Kul say that every 10-15 minutes, trucks bring garbage from Cholpon-Ata, Khutor, and Bosteri and leave it at this landfill. When the wind blows from the mountains, the smell reaches the racetrack and even more so the nearby residential houses.
Our hometown is turning into a garbage dump. We can no longer look at this without tears. The authorities are doing nothing, and the landfill is growing.
Let us remind you that back in June 2017, the Internal Affairs Department of the Issyk-Kul region initiated a criminal case against the mayor of Cholpon-Ata, Karybek Saralaev, under Article 265 ("Violation of environmental protection rules during work") and Article 353 ("Abuse of power") of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. The issue with the landfill was not resolved, and the operational period was extended for another 10 years. Earlier, on March 24 of the same year, the State Ecological and Technical Inspection issued orders to close the landfill. However, the leadership of Cholpon-Ata took no measures and continued to dump waste at this site. It turns out that currently, the orders from the State Ecological and Technical Inspection to close the landfill are simply not being fulfilled.
The irrational, outdated, and immoral policies of local authorities and capital officials in the field of waste collection and disposal have led to the creation of more than 100 landfills within the biosphere territory. All of them do not meet modern requirements for the organization of such facilities. Dozens of hectares of beautiful and invaluable land have been allocated for landfills.
