Poaching (Animals)

Poaching. 89 illegal fishing nets with a total length of 8.9 km found in the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir.

In the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir, 89 poaching fishing nets with a total length of 8 kilometers and 900 meters have been discovered. According to information that has appeared in a number of media outlets, the bottom and shore of the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir are covered with fishing nets. The day before, employees of the Issyk-Kul and Naryn territorial departments of the environmental protection agency found 89 fishing nets with a total length of 8,900 meters in the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir. Additionally, 17 fish (sig-ludoga) were found in the caught gear. "The nets have been destroyed in accordance with the established procedure at a landfill, and the fish have been transferred for safekeeping to a fish store in Balykchy. Furthermore, appropriate measures will be taken to identify those involved in illegal fishing," the statement said. At the same time, according to a representative of the fishing community, the problem with poachers has not been resolved for years; the bottom of the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir, from which water has been drained, is covered with poachers' fishing nets. "A million kilometers of synthetic nets lie across the entire bottom. The whole lake is shrouded in nets. Poachers set nets and catch fish during the day without fear, using motorboats. They come down from the side of the dam, where they are guarded by police. So, are they in on it? And where are the rangers and ecologists looking?" the representative of the fishing community expressed indignation. He calls on environmental activists to pay attention to the problem.
