In the village of Min-Kush in the Naryn region, there are four tailings storage facilities and four ore and waste dumps. Those located near rivers are the most dangerous. All tailings storage facilities and waste dumps, except for the tailings storage facility in the village of Kadji-Sai, are situated in the basins of the Naryn and Maili-Sai rivers.
For example, the burial site "Tuyuk-Suu" is located by the river of the same name near the village of Min-Kush. A landslide has been occurring near the river for several years. If it blocks the riverbed, water could flood the tailings storage facility and carry waste from it into the Naryn River. The river would then spread the waste all the way to the territory of the Aral Sea.
Due to the storage of radioactive waste in the Min-Kush province, soil degradation is taking place. All phenomena occurring around the Tuyuk-Suu tailings storage facility are destroying vegetation, and the soil is losing its natural means of protection against all types of erosion.
In Kyrgyzstan, there are 92 sites with radioactive and toxic waste from mining production, including 33 tailings storage facilities and 25 waste dumps. Most of them are located in areas of transboundary water runoff formation in regions with high seismic activity and landslide hazards. According to official sources, the radiation background in the village significantly exceeds the permissible level - 120 micro-roentgen per hour. Despite this, people continue to live in Min-Kush.
